7 Ways Insurers Are Using AI Right Now: Production Use Cases Across the Value Chain
AI in insurance is not coming. It is here. Across underwriting, claims, compliance, and pricing, production AI systems are already running at leading insurers and financial institutions — not in pilots, not in proof-of-concepts, but in live workflows that affect decisions and outcomes daily. What follows is a practitioner’s view of seven use cases I see deployed most consistently, drawn from working across jurisdictions on actuarial and IFRS 17 implementations.
1. Underwriting Risk Scoring
Traditional underwriting relies on a small set of structured variables — age, geography, sum insured, occupation class — fed into actuarially calibrated rating tables. Machine learning models can consume far more inputs simultaneously: telematics streams, property imagery, environmental data, claims history, and third-party enrichment. The result is a risk score that is more granular and, in many cases, more predictive than the rating tables alone.
In practice, most insurers use AI scores to triage submissions — flagging outliers for human review while auto-accepting standard-risk business. This creates efficiency gains on volume books (motor, household, SME commercial) while preserving underwriter judgment for complex risks. The governance requirement follows: when a model rejects or prices out a risk, the audit trail must be explainable to regulators and the insured. Insurers that moved fast on deployment and slow on documentation are now retrofitting explainability frameworks after the fact.
2. Claims Automation
Straight-through processing on low-complexity claims is the most commercially mature AI use case in the industry. For high-frequency, low-severity claims — minor motor damage, travel delays, simple property losses — AI can ingest the first notification of loss, validate coverage, assess damage from submitted images or sensor data, and issue a settlement offer without human intervention.
The economics are compelling: claims handling is one of the larger controllable expense lines for personal lines insurers, and reducing handling time from days to minutes has measurable effects on retention. What limits deployment is the edge case problem — novel claim types, inflated submissions, or unusual policy wordings break automation. The answer is a confidence threshold: claims above it are auto-settled, claims below are routed to a handler. Calibrating that threshold is an actuarial exercise as much as an engineering one.
3. Fraud Detection
Insurance fraud is a volume problem. Most individual fraudulent claims are too small to justify manual investigation — but at scale they represent a significant drag on the loss ratio. AI changes the economics by screening every claim rather than a sampled subset.
Graph-based models are particularly effective here: they map relationships between claimants, service providers, brokers, and policy data, identifying network structures that correlate with organised fraud rings — patterns invisible when reviewing a single file, but clear across thousands. The false positive rate is the critical design constraint. Wrongly flagging a legitimate claim is a customer harm and a regulatory exposure, which is why fraud models in production prioritise investigation queues rather than binary decisions. The model surfaces the candidates; the investigator makes the call.
4. Sentiment Analysis
Customer-facing AI — chatbots, virtual agents, automated correspondence — generates large volumes of interaction data. Sentiment models process that data to identify customers who are distressed, lapse-prone, or likely to escalate complaints, feeding into retention workflows and quality assurance processes.
Beyond customer interactions, sentiment analysis is being applied to claims phone calls and email threads to detect early signals of complaint escalation before a matter reaches the ombudsman or regulator. The more effective deployments cross-reference sentiment signals with policy and claims data: a customer who has had a disputed claim, called three times, and scored negative on their last interaction is a materially higher lapse risk than the model average. Combining those signals gives retention teams a meaningful basis for prioritising outreach.
5. Actuarial Reporting
This is the use case closest to my own work. Actuarial reporting cycles — reserving, pricing reviews, regulatory returns — involve large volumes of structured data processing, model runs, and output validation. A significant share of actuarial time goes on tasks that are rule-based and repeatable rather than requiring professional judgment.
AI and automation tools compress that repeatable work: ingesting data from multiple systems, running model pipelines, flagging anomalies against prior-period benchmarks, and drafting narrative commentary from structured outputs. Under IFRS 17, where reporting granularity has increased substantially, pipeline automation is operationally necessary to close on time. The actuarial value-add shifts accordingly — selecting assumptions, interpreting outputs, communicating uncertainty to boards and regulators — and actuaries who can design and govern those pipelines hold a skill set that remains in short supply.
6. Document Search and Compliance
Insurers operate under layered regulatory frameworks — prudential requirements, conduct standards, disclosure rules, AML obligations — that vary by jurisdiction and change regularly. Applying the right rules to the right products and territories is a material compliance overhead.
AI-powered retrieval systems — built on retrieval-augmented generation architectures — allow compliance and legal teams to query large document repositories in natural language. Rather than searching manually through policy wordings and regulatory circulars, a team member gets a sourced answer in seconds. The critical design requirement is that the source surfaces alongside the answer so users can verify before acting. Acting on an AI-generated summary without checking the source is a compliance risk that is not priced into most operating models.
7. Personalised Pricing
Usage-based insurance in motor is the most visible example: telematics data feeds a model that prices each renewal on actual driving behaviour rather than demographic proxies. The insurer gets better risk selection; the lower-risk customer gets a lower premium.
The same logic is extending into health, life, and commercial lines, using wearable health data, building sensors, and supply chain information to move pricing closer to actual risk experience. The actuarial work shifts from fitting aggregate rate tables to validating model outputs against experience and ensuring differentials remain defensible under anti-discrimination and treating-customers-fairly requirements. Regulatory scrutiny on AI-driven pricing is increasing in most markets, and pricing models that have not been documented and tested against fairness criteria are a liability in the making.
The Pattern Across All Seven
Looking across these use cases, the common thread is not the technology — it is workflow integration. The deployments that work feed AI output directly into existing decisions, with a clear human review point where model confidence is low or stakes are high. The deployments that struggle are parallel systems with informal governance, sitting outside core workflows. Every production AI system in a regulated institution also requires documentation: what it was trained on, what it decides, how it is monitored for drift, and who is accountable when it is wrong. That is not a barrier to adoption — it is the condition under which adoption can be sustained.
